Verdi Year
Barcelona’s grand opera house, the Liceu, raises the curtain on its Verdi Year cycle, honouring the centenary of the Italian composer’s death in 1901. The first act is a season of his opera ‘A Masked Ball’, a typically passionate saga of secret romance intertwined with political conspiracy. From Jan 27, the Liceu will mark the actual anniversary of Giuseppe’s death with a marathon three-part concert featuring music from all of his operas. The recently rebuilt and lavishly redecorated Liceu regularly sells out and very early booking is essential.

Henry Casselli
Painter Henry Caseselli’s career has gone through several unusual phases, all of which are on view at this retrospective at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Casselli came from a blue-collar family in New Orleans but managed to find his way to art school. In the mid-1960s he joined the Army and was sent to Vietnam as a ‘combat artist’, which later led to involvement with the US space programme and selection as the official portraitist of Ronald Reagan. Casselli’s finely tuned images suggest comparisons with Andrew Wyeth and even John Singer Sargent. Whether he’s painting Marines at war, astronauts, mothers with babies or the segregated South of his childhood, Casselli approaches his subjects with a deeply felt tenderness and respect.

Stowaways
The Phillipe Genty Company brings its fantastic vision of theatre to the Mercat de les Flors. Actors, dancers and puppets share protagonism, amid huge surreal sets, to create a spectacle that owes less to conventional storytelling and more to dreams. Frenchman Phillipe Genty, who began as a puppet specialist, started developing this style of performance in collaboration with English choreographer Mary Underwood in the 1970s. The current show ‘Passatgers Clandestins’, as it’s called locally, is on a European tour.
