The subway between the Bolshoi Theater and the Metropol hotel is the home to an English speaking film buff’s delight. The kiosk closest to the Metropol hotel is the purveyor of the finest Western movies – weeks, sometimes months before they reach the cinemas. The pirates have even been known to arrive before they premier in their home country. Be warned though as they can be of dubious quality – often filmed in the cinema with members of the audience getting up and shadowing the screen. A video should cost 190R.

Football: Real Madrid vs Celta de Vigo
Real Madrid-Celta clashes have become something of a classic as the visitors have earned themselves the reputation of being Spain’s most attractive side in the last couple of seasons. Both teams are currently riding high, Madrid in Champions’ League positions and Celta, only one point behind, just outside the UEFA zone. Real’s is somewhat off colour of late. Celta’s firepower, from Brazilian Catanha and Russians Mostovoi and Karpin, could make them good for a point although a home win is more likely.

La fleur de ble noir
La fleur is the place to go on a Friday evening after a concert at the nearby Cirque Royal. It’s a Bretonne creperie with an astonishing choice of fillings, both savoury and sweet. Try the ‘crepe trois etages’ (smoked ham, Swiss cheese, egg, salad and tomatoes) or the ‘crepe Toscane’ (smoked ham, mozzarella, tomatoes and basil). There’s a great value three-course menu for aficionados and you’ll also find salads, pasta and ice cream. Be warned, it’s only open at lunchtime and Friday evening.
