This hotel bar has been a consistent standout for nine years. It hasn’t had to reinvent itself to grab attention. The lounge’s brushed-shell interior provides a refined platform from which to sit and sip a drink. The bartenders are swift and attentive. But if you’re with friends, you may prefer the more intimate setting down in the so-called opium den, a cosy little enclave decorated with Middle Eastern drapes, couches and cushions. Most nights the den offers live music. One extra royal touch – the drinks are always served in a goblet.

Join the forest fairies in a mystical wonderland full of enchanted gardens linked by meandering paths, created by gardening supremos Margaret Roberts and Ray Hudson. The festival includes ceramic displays, a craft market, lectures and demonstrations. At weekends, your whimsical wanderings through the landscape will be serenaded by bewitching musical entertainment. The festival climaxes with a glamorous Grande finale (August 27, 3.30pm), featuring The People’s Princess rose concert with the Black Tie Ensemble.

Situated along the increasingly popular Fondamenta della Misericordia, a short walk from the train station in the heart of Cannaregio, this friendly and raucous tavern run by Captain Haddock’s twin brother serves up home-cooked seafood, tasty tapas-style cicchetti and shots of grappa long after the neighbours have closed down the hatches. A great place if you have something to celebrate, but ring ahead to check the live music – the blind pianist must be heard to be believed.
